Sangrur administration restoring canal watercourses to save groundwater: Jitendra Jorwal

Pilot project implemented successfully at Rajomajra village of Dhuri with the support of farmers

Sangrur : To save the depleting groundwater and to encourage canal water irrigation, the district administration Sangrur has taken a initiative to restore the canal irrigation of the fields through watercourses in the villages. While divulging details, Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal said that following the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the administration has started this campaign to save the groundwater as it has already been depleted on an alarming level in the region.
He said that at first, it was taken as a pilot project at village Rajomajra of Dhuri sub-division in November last year which was completed successfully. He said that the farmers of Rajomajra have given full support for this work and provided the land of watercourses voluntarily to the administration.
He said that due to the cooperation of farmers, the work has also been started at village Bhagwanpura, Tolawal, Namol, Ratangarh Patianwali, Salemgarh, Sherpur, Alal and Mulowal to fulfill the same objective. Deputy Commissioner said that under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Varjeet Walia, this project has been underway in various villages after the preliminary survey and it would be successfully implemented in the coming months.
He said that while preparing the outline of this pilot project at Rajomajra, it was estimated that the length of the canal was about 10,000 feet and it was found that the watercourse did not exist at several locations for which the farmers and village panchayats extended full cooperation to vacate the land of watercourses. He said that now more than 250 acres of land has been brought under canal water irrigation with the help of this project at Rajomajra.
Deputy Commissioner said that the teams of the Panchayat Department and the Irrigation Department also conducted surveys in other villages of the district on requirement basis and now the Sub Divisional Magistrate concerned in these villages have been personally monitoring the projects to ensure successful implementation.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Under Training Nitesh Jain and SDM Rajesh Sharma also reviewed the ongoing works of restoring the watercourses at village Samuran of Dirba on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal. SDM Rajesh Sharma informed that there were 35 villages under sub division Dirba, in which farmers were being encouraged to use canal water and were also being made aware of its benefits.
