AAP creates history, wins two more Rajya Sabha seats unopposed

Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Vikramjit Singh Sahney declared as the Rajya Sabha members today

Chandigarh : Creating history, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday unopposed won two Rajya Sabha seats, taking the total tally of the party to 7 members in the upper house of the Parliament from the Punjab.In an unprecedented move in the Punjab politics, AAP has clinched all the seats of the Rajya Sabha from the state. Punjab has elected 7 members for a term of 6 years.Pertinently, as the AAP had secured the highest tally of 92 MLAs in the recently held assembly polls, the opposition parties did not even field any candidates.

Earlier, on Friday, the Returning Officer-cum-Secretary, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Surinder Pal has declared elected noted environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and entrepreneur-social activist Vikramjit Singh Sahney as the Rajya Sabha members after withdrawal of nomination by one candidate.The Returning Officer-cum-Secretary has also handed over them the ‘Certificates of Election’, declaring them members of the upper house (Rajya Sabha) here.

Elected leaders also met Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan. Speaker, while congratulating the both newly elected leaders, expressed confidence that they will work gingerly for the betterment of the Punjab and will also raise the crucial issues of the state in the upper house.After the induction of Seechewal and Sahney as the Rajya Sabha members, the AAP government has outnumbered other political parties to reach the parliament. They already have five other members including Harbhajan Singh, Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Sanjeev Arora and Ashok Mittal in the upper house.
