LPU wrestler will represent India at Birmingham Commonwealth Games-2022

Now, LPU student Pooja Gehlot has been qualified for 50kg category freestyle wrestling competition for the prestigious quadrennial international competitions

Jalandhar : One of the woman-wrestlers studying at Lovely Professional University (LPU), Pooja Gehlot has recently qualified for the prestigious quadrennial Commonwealth Games-2022, to be held at Birmingham (UK). Pooja will compete at freestyle wrestling competition, in 50kg weight category, of the international competitions.Pooja has been an outstanding wrestler with numerous medals, which also include Bronze medal won at Senior National Wrestling Championships in 2021. Now, she is being expected to be an important part of the Indian contingent for contributing to the winsome actions at the games.

Since the 2010 Commonwealth Games, India has been consistently represented by a good number of talented athletes at these international competitions. Including LPU wrestler, the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham (UK) is presumed to witness the Indian contingent among top medallists. It is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth countries. The games are scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 8, 2022.Congratulating all the talented students at the university, LPU Chancellor Dr Ashok Mittal shared: “It’s a matter of immense pride for the LPU family that one more sports woman is on the way to bring more laurels to the country and the university. We believe that academics, curricular and co-curricular activities should go hand in hand for the perfect personality development of a student.”

Dr Mittal further said: “We have various encouraging schemes and awards for talented students to showcase winning performances at national and international levels. Lately, we have honoured Olympic- winners of LPU with cash awards handsomely so that others may also come forward with their individual best within.”Recently, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Thakur, has also felicitated another sportswoman (boxer) Parveen of LPU for winning the boxing bronze medal at World Championships-2022 held in Turkey.
