Chief Information Commissioner Khushwant Singh addressed LPU’s Law Students
Jalandhar : The Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Punjab State, Hon’ble Khushwant Singh addressed Law students at Lovely Professional University (LPU). This occasion was the three-day conduction of ‘Right to Information Act’ awareness programme on the inception day of the act in 2005.
He also released a summarized seven chaptered RTI Act booklet to let all understand the core of this most democratic ‘Act’ in brief. LPU School of Law had organized the programme, in collaboration with the State Information Commission, Punjab, at the Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium of the University.
The invited guest, an established authority on the topic, invoked Law students to always stand public spirited and help needy people through RTI Act. He also implored them to read this act thoroughly; understand it properly in practical form; use it for community; and, make the public feel happy and satisfied as per their queries.
Quoting the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, the HoD of Law School Dr Meenu Chopra shared with students that any of the “information is the currency of democracy”. During the concluding hours, prominently participating students and staff members in various activities of the conduction were encouraged with awards.
LPU Chancellor Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal, who is also a Law Graduate, congratulated all at the helm of affairs at the important informative conduction. Dr Mittal also beckoned students to be the true personifications of the Law in their career ahead.
They released 7-chaptered booklet titled ‘RTI-A Ready Reckoner’ contains necessary know-how about the act in very brief and understanding form. Chapter wise, it illustrates: ‘Let’s know our Right to Know, Right to Information Act, 2005’; Meaning of Information; Meaning of Public Authority-Information Provider, RTI Statistics at a glance; Organizations Exempted: Process of obtaining Information; Information exempted from disclosure; Essential aspects of RTI Application; Process of Filing an RTI Application; and, Timelines, penalties.
